2007 World Cup!

On Saturday night an amazing thing happened. The South Africa Springboks won the 2007 Rugby World Cup in a close game against England. During the game the bars were packed, every television in the country was on and there was not a sole outside. It was a close game, although the Boks managed to maintain their lead throughout. Honestly, the game itself was not that interesting because neither of the teams felt like running the ball. The final score was 15-6.

After the game you could hear cheers and yelling reverberate off the buildings, coming from downtown, the waterfront and neighboring Claremont. The unlucky ones were those who were traveling in cars because the streets were flooded with jubilant, dancing people. For the first time Lower Main Road seemed lively instead of barren. Everyone was ecstatic. Even the police were forgiving and although they almost performed some arrests, they ended up letting everybody go- They were outnumbered by a crowd that did not want to be suppressed in their glory. I have never experienced such an event and honestly, I don’t know if it will ever happen again. I feel as if no celebration, not even the best New Years, can compete with the events that unfolded Saturday night.
